COURSE OVERVIEW

Take your child on a journey of learning about the people, places, and relationships that make up communities as they explore community needs and their own role in the community. This course includes 15 20-minute lessons for your child on the themes of community, responsibility and how they are alike or different. Each lesson builds upon its theme with fun offline activities and engaging videos.

Upon completion of this course, your child will have learned about important roles in the community and how they can demonstrate responsibility for their own community and for the world. They will also have gained an understanding of how communities can be alike and different.

LESSON 1: WHAT IS A COMMUNITY?

Introduce your child to the concept of community, including what it is, what it includes, and how it’s similar to a habitat for living things. This lesson will help your child become more aware of the community they live in, more familiar with various community job positions and services, and help them develop a sense of belonging in their own community.

LESSON 2: PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY: FIREFIGHTERS

Provide your child with an understanding of the importance of firefighters in the community and the ways in which they keep our communities safe. This lesson is also designed to help your child understand the nature of fires, their causes, and the risks and dangers they pose, and to learn about fire safety and prevention.

LESSON 3: PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY: DOCTORS

Teach your child that doctors are community workers who work to keep the community safe and healthy and that it takes considerable education to become a doctor. Your child will also learn it is a doctor’s job to help people stay healthy and to take care of those who are sick, and how doctors use different tools to keep us healthy. They will also learn the importance of good health.

LESSON 4: PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY: TEACHERS

Explore the role of teachers within the community with your child. This course will help your child understand the different types of teachers, what their roles are, and how teachers impact the lives of their students. Your child will also gain an understanding that individuals in a community have different abilities, and that everyone can contribute to the community.

LESSON 5: COMMUNITY PLACES: LIBRARY

Familiarize your child with the library as a community resource for learning! This course will help you teach your child how to find, use, and take care of library materials, encouraging a positive and lifelong experience in reading and learning. This course will also help them understand that libraries are where they can go to find books and many other kinds of resources to learn just about anything!

LESSON 6: WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY?

Introduce your child to the concept of responsibility and how it applies to their daily lives, such as the responsibility of being a pet owner, taking care of yourself, and completing daily chores. Your child will learn that responsibility means “being in charge” of something or taking care of something.

LESSON 7: RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE COMMUNITY

Help your child understand the importance of taking responsibility for their community and the impact the community has on its members and others. Your child will understand that neglecting responsibilities can lead to negative consequences. Your child will also learn that community leaders carry out many responsibilities to make their communities successful.

LESSON 8: RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PLANET

Teach your child what it means to be responsible for the planet and protect natural resources. This lesson includes the concept of conservation and the impact of individual actions on the environment.

LESSON 9: RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FUTURE

Teach your child how to prepare for the future by being responsible for themselves and their community and about the importance of following rules and laws that are intended to keep people in the community safe. This lesson will help them to understand that being responsible for themselves is good for both the individual and the community.

LESSON 10: RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING

Introduce your child to the concepts of reducing, reusing, and recycling, as well as the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. Your child will learn that taking care of Earth and its natural resources is everyone’s responsibility and that reducing, reusing, and recycling help conserve those resources.

LESSON 11: ALIKE, DIFFERENT, OR SIMILAR?

Give your child practice in comparing and contrasting objects and ideas. This lesson will help your child develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as their abilities to understand and analyze information and communicate their ideas effectively.

LESSON 12: ALIKE OR DIFFERENT IN THE WORLD AROUND US

Help your child develop the ability to recognize similarities and differences in the natural world, as well as in people, cultures, and communities. Your child will learn that people in America are alike in that they live in the same country, but they are different in many other ways. Your child will understand that they can find many things that are both alike and different in the world around them.

LESSON 13: CULTURES ARE ALIKE AND DIFFERENT

Help your child understand and appreciate the diversity of human cultures and develop the ability to think more deeply and empathetically about cultural differences and similarities. This lesson will also expose your child to differences in language, traditions, food, clothing, ideas, art and more.

LESSON 14: WORDS ARE ALIKE AND DIFFERENT

Teach your child to identify and understand the similarities and differences among words and to recognize homophones. This lesson is designed to develop your child’s vocabulary and language skills, which are essential for reading comprehension, writing, and communication in general. Your child will learn that, like people, animals, and things, even words can be alike in some ways and different in others!

LESSON 15: COINS ARE ALIKE AND DIFFERENT

Introduce your child to the concept of money and help familiarize them with different types of coins, their values, and how they are used in everyday life. This lesson will also help your child develop basic math skills as they count coins.
